Birdwood Now & Then
As temperatures
cool down, sun-drenched days are a duffer's dream, and for golf lovers there's
no better place to play a round than Birdwood. Birdwood Golf Course is a testament
to the ability of nature and commerce to co-exist, with a 72-hole championship
golf course that also has been certified as an Audobon Cooperative Sanctuary.
The history of the property on which Birdwood Golf Course is built dates back to 1739 when a land patent proclaiming the area an "Upland Wilderness" was filed. The rich agricultural features of the property allowed cattle and horse ranchers to raise prize livestock, and in 1819, the original Birdwood Pavilion was constructed.
When the University of Virginia purchased the property in 1974,
the idea
for Birdwood Golf Course was born. Today the course offers its guests diversely
different views on the front and back nine, from expansive wide open vistas
to rolling hills bordered by often dense woods. The natural beauty of the
course reflects its setting, and it's a course one feels privileged to play.
