The Monticello Wine Trail Proves “Jefferson was right!”
Thomas Jefferson once
proclaimed that he believed Virginia could produce wines as good as those
in Europe. From modest beginnings, the area surrounding Charlottesville has
continued to blossom as a wine-producing region. Today more than 500 acres
of grapevines cascade through the area surrounding Monticello, producing a
variety of local award-winning wines.
In a living celebration of the area’s designation as “The Wine
Capital of Virginia,” the Monticello Wine Trail offers wine enthusiasts
more than 20 wineries worth visiting, ranging from large production vineyards
to small, boutique wineries that produce just a few thousand cases a year.
In addition to sampling Monticello
region
wines, visitors along the four designated “wine trails” will enjoy
breathtaking views, friendly vintners, and the opportunity to sample some
of the best wines east of the Mississippi.
To wet your pallet with delicious Virginia wines, start by visiting the Monticello Wine Trail website. There you can peruse a calendar of events, which includes:
• Barboursville Holiday Open House - November 28-29
• Horton Vineyards Holiday Open House - November 28-29
• Wintergreen Winery "Get in the Spirit" - November 28-29
• Veritas Winery Third Annual Masked Ball - December 31
• King Family Vineyards Valentine's Day Dinner - February 14, 2009
Most wineries are open to the public daily throughout the year. Information
on individual wineries can be found by linking to their websites from the
Monticello Wine Trail site. If you’d like to know a little more about
wine production in our region, or if you would like a personal recommendation
