History Lives in the Green Springs Historic District
One of the best things
about living in Virginia is the mix of old and new. With historic sites in
most villages, cities and towns, our region pays homage to the past every
day of the year.
The Green Springs National Historic District, located within the western boundary of Louisa County, includes more than 14,000 acres of historic agricultural land and impressive manor homes adjacent to Route 15. More than 250 historic homes, barns, and outbuildings from the 18th and 19th centuries are still standing in the area.
All properties within the district are privately owned, and as such there are no organized tours or activities, but the homes and surrounding agricultural land is visible from the road. Easements are held by the National Park Service, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and Historic Green Springs, Inc., a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to preserving the architecture and the history of the area.
If contemplating a purchase of property in the Green Springs area, be sure that you completely understand how these easements impact your new property.
The history of Green Springs dates back to an early Quaker settlement in the 1720s. Settlers from Hanover County arrived shortly after and took advantage of the lush, basin like area to establish large farms of rolling pasture land and stately homes with grand architecture. Through the years, the families grew, intermarried, and continued to build out the area with impressive manors, plantations, large barns, and fertile fields.
Farming continues in this area, just as it has for nearly 300 years. The area is considered to be part of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, a celebration of historic sites throughout the original 13 colonies of the United States.
