Train Service to Washington, D.C.?
Currently there are two
rail routes via Amtrak from Charlottesville to Washington, D.C. The Cardinal
begins its journey in Chicago and the Crescent begins in New Orleans, both
are enroute to New York City and pass through Washington, D.C. By the time
they come through Charlottesville, there are few seats available for the local
commuters.
Hopefully this will soon change due to the efforts of many communities and businesses throughout the state of Virginia, including Charlottesville's Piedmont Rail Coalition. In January the Commonwealth Transportation Board will vote on whether to approve millions in funding for the first inter-city passenger rail service in Virginia. If approved, the first trains will start running between Lynchburg and D.C. as early as late January. This will be the first step in creating the long awaited Trans-Dominion Express, which if it comes to fruition will run passenger service from Bristol through Roanoke and Lynchburg to Richmond.
The Department of Rail and Public Transportation is now accepting public comments on this proposal and will be having meetings across the state during January. Keep your fingers crossed!
