Nelson County, Virginia

Located south of Charlottesville and north of Lynchburg is Nelson County, a beautiful county with the Blue Ridge Mountains forming the western boundary and the James River creating the eastern boundary. In between you will find lush rolling pastures, established hardwood forests and citizens who truly appreciate the blessings that Mother Nature has bestowed upon them.

Nelson County was named for Thomas Nelson, Jr. the third governor of Virginia. English colonists reached Nelson County in the early 1700's via the James River, an area where many plantation homes and estates were built on the hillsides overlooking the river. Currently there are two of these estate homes on the market.

Nelson County has always been an agricultural community. Today you can find close to 1000 acres of apples growing throughout the county as well as vineyards and many livestock operations. The county ranks fifth in the state of Virginia in both apple and grape production.

Earl Hamner, Jr, author and creator of the TV series "The Waltons," grew up in Nelson and based his writings on life in Nelson County during the Depression. The Walton's Mountain Museum in Schuyler showcases many of his works.

In August of 1969, Hurricane Camille ravaged the mountain sides of Nelson County dumping 27+ inches of rain over a 5-hour period. 153 people within Nelson County lost their lives that night and 133 bridges were washed away. A little ray of sunshine did come from that night. To read my story, visit the Ginger Gold Apple Story.

Today, Nelson County has much to offer. The four-season resort of Wintergreen and Stoney Creek offers skiing, golfing, horseback riding, swimming, and hiking. Many restaurants can be found throughout the resort as well as a spa for relaxing those tired muscles from all the acitivities! Wintergreen is adjacent to the George Washington National Forest and Blue Ridge Parkway.

Some of the more popular events in the county are the Batteau Festival, Nelson County Festival, and many Apple and Winery Festivals. For a much quieter, back to nature experience, visit The Nature Conservancy's Fortune's Cove.
