Charlottesville, a Smart City?
This is Jefferson's town, so education has always been important. Forbes and Sperlings agreed this year and ranked Charlottesville as the 17th smartest city in the country. While the area has great public and private schools and of course several local colleges and univeristies, a little known educational opportunity exists at the University of Virginia called the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). This is a program tailored to seniors and has been offered at UVA for many years but this year will also be offered in the Shenandoah Valley. Classes meet during the day for three to six weeks and are conducted by volunteer specialists in the field as well as professors from local colleges and universities. These university level short courses are offered in the fields of art, music, drama, conntemporary living, religion, humanitites, philosophy, science and social and political issues.
