Cul-de-Sacs Now History
Desire
to live in a neighborhood on a cul-de-sac street?
Last month to the surprise of most of us, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine banned the use of cul-de-sacs in future Virginia developments. While cul-de-sacs may be built in private communities where the residents cover the cost of maintenance for the roads, if the state is to provide maintenance such as snow removal, then all streets must be thorough streets.
By having through streets, localities can prevent the traffic congestion entering major highways from small communities of multiple cul-de-sacs. The idea is that there will be a more direct route through the neighborhood roads to get to the grocery store or Starbucks rather than having to utilze the major roads for short trips.
Many people feel that cul-de-sacs provide a safer living environment, such
as being a deterrent to crime as well as a safe haven for children to play.
Will this ban impact the perceived value of homes already built on public
streets with cul-de-sacs?
