Take a Hike in Charlottesville
If you are
looking for a way to stretch your legs, the Charlottesville Virginia area
abounds with hiking trails. Regardless of your fitness level, there is a trail
for you. Here are a few of my favorites.
For a short, close to Charlottesville hike, try the Monticello Trail. The trail meanders through Carter's Mountain and leads you to Monticello. The trail at its steepest is 5% and offers dramatic views overlooking Charlottesville.
Another great hike close to Charlottesville is in the Ivy Creek Natural Area near Earlysville. The 215 acre preserve that borders on the South Rivanna Reservoir offers 11 trails ranging from easy to moderately challenging and span over seven miles.
The Rivanna Trail serves as a 20-mile Greenbelt around the
perimeter
of Charlottesville. All around town you can see the signs for the trail. There
are several short hikes that make up the entire trail, one of the most pleasant
is parking at RiverView Park and enjoying the trail as it meanders beside
the Rivanna River.
Ten miles south of Charlottesville near Red Hill is the Walnut Creek Recreation Area. There are trails surrounding the 20-acre lake. The easier hike is along the lake which is approximately five miles long. Try some of the outer trails for a more challenging experience. In addition to the trails, Walnut Creek offers swimming, canoeing, and fishing opportunitites.
